Year 5 Visit to Pizza Express

This term, Year 5 students had the most amazing learning experience at several London branches of Pizza Express.  An entire morning was spent learning about great food, tasting fresh ingredients and of course, making authentic, Italian pizza.  Earlier this year, Year 5 students learnt bread making as part of the DT curriculum.

Four classes visited four different restaurants last week: Yew class at the O2 on the 2nd of July; Rowan class at Stratford East Theatre Square on the 2nd of July; Poplar class at Clerkenwell Road on the 3rd of July and Spindle class at Leadenhall Market on the 5th of July.

When the children arrived at the restaurants, they were greeted by the Restaurant Manager and their team.  First of all, the Manager discussed important cooking basics including washing hands and staying safe in the kitchen.  Then, the pizzaiolo (pizza chef) took over and demonstrated how to make a famous, Italian classic: the Margherita.

Every child had the opportunity to knead the dough until it was a perfect base.  Then, they enjoyed topping their creations with tomato sauce, basil and mozzarella.  While the pizzas were placed in the ‘giant’ oven, children participated in an Ingredients quiz.

The most thrilling moment was when their pizzas finally came out of the oven! Yes! ‘My pizza!’ Some children had some of their pizza at the restaurant while others took their creations back to school for lunch, along with their Junior Pizzaiolo certificates.

Well done, pizza chefs!

Thank you to the management and teams at Pizza Express for giving our Year 5 students this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be pizza chefs.

Thank you to all parents and carers who came along to support our Year 5 classes last week.

This week, Willow class will visit Pizza Express at Tower Bridge.  Students look forward to a stroll along London’s famous landmark.
