Y6 Air Pollution assembly

Y6 Air Pollution assembly

On Friday 25th March 2022, Year 6 students had a special visit from the local MP, Stephen Timms, who had been the recipient of their formal persuasive letters addressing the problem of air pollution levels in Newham.

Adam from Oak class; Varsa from Lime class; Sumaiyah from Juniper class, Dua from Pine class and Sanjana from Maple class shared extracts from their letters and read eloquently to their audience. In addition, they presented recommendations to Mr Timms, who then commented on any existing strategies and discussed future ideas for the local community.

This was followed by a lively discussion with the MP, students and also teachers about concerns about air pollution but also other topics including the war in Ukraine. Also in attendance were Year 6 support staff, our Executive Headteacher, Sarah Rowlands and acting Head of School, Mrs Musinguzi, who were all eager to celebrate our children’s learning and how their writing was made purposeful.

Some of the children’s questions included the following:

  • What have you done so far to tackle pollution in Newham?
  • What aspect of your job would you consider most important?
  • What steps are being taken to ensure that NO2 concentration levels do not escalate further?

Children also completed their reflections using the platform, Google classroom. Here are some reflections highlighting their learning.
